CASEMENT & AWNING
Crank it open and the whole opening opens.
A casement swings out to the side; an awning hinges at the top. Both are crank-operated, and both seal tighter than a sliding sash because the handle pulls them into the frame.
The most ventilation you can get
Because the sash swings clear of the opening, a casement gives you close to all of the glass area as airflow. A hung window gives you half.
Awnings can stay open in the rain
Hinged at the top, so water runs off the outside of the glass. Good over a kitchen sink, a bath, or a laundry room.
A tighter seal
The crank draws the sash in against the weatherstrip all the way around, which is why casements usually test better on air infiltration.
